Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.

Whoever coined that phrase is a bald-faced liar. Words are often the sharpest weapon of all, triggering some of the most powerful emotions a human can experience.

“You’re pregnant.”

“It’s a boy.”

“Your son needs a heart transplant.”

Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.

Syllables and letters may not be tangible, but they can still destroy your entire life faster than a bullet from a gun.

Two words—that was all it took to extinguish the sun from my sky.

“He’s gone.”

For ten years, the darkness consumed me.

In the end, it was four deep, gravelly words that gave me hope of another sunrise.

“Hi. I’m Porter Reese.”

5 Stars

I actually felt like i held my breath for quite a bit of this book. What a story, i’m at a total loss for words, my heart hasn’t quite recovered and now i feel like i’m just rambling on but wow, just wow. Aly has done an amazing job with this book, its a highly emotional, intense, captivating story of two souls who are lost in the darkness, struggling to pull themselves out just going through the motions, existing not living.

Charlotte has literally been to hell and not come back from it. She has endured things that no mother should ever have to and now left with nothing else she throws herself into her work as a doctor. For 10 years she has been like a robot, devoid of any emotion, wearing the same mask day in day out and she sees no light at the end of the tunnel, her hope dwindling as each day passes.

Porter, OMG this man had me swooning right from the start. Three years after the death of his wife, there are still so many unanswered questions around the events of that fateful night. He can’t make sense of it but as sole parent to two children, one of whom is sick, he has learnt to put on a face for their sake. But the darkness consumes him constantly and with his son’s health declining rapidly, he will do anything to help him including trying to get Grace to bend her no treating children rule. She’s the best and doesn’t his son deserves that.

The connection between these two is intense and woven with passion and understanding that no other person can truly understand. “Two people alone in the darkness. No questions, No judgements, No faking it” Your emotions will run high whilst reading this book, despair one minute to laughing at the witty humour and banter the next which only helps to weave these characters further into your heart. Knowing it was a duet, I expected a cliffhanger but oh my, that ending !!!! This is a beautiful, intense story full of passion, loss and of finding love and learning to let go of the past and move into the sunlight. I can’t wait to read book 2

You won’t want to miss this amazing series!

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her four young children.

Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys cheap wine, mystery leggings, and baked feta. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person.

She passes what little free time she has reading anything and everything she can get her hands on, preferably with a super-sized tumbler of wine by her side.
